Nanotechnology

Minatec is an education and industrial transfer and research center that includes 115 laboratories employing 3,600 researchers focused on micro and nanotechnology, biotechnology, new energy technologies, and nanomaterials.  Right next to Minatec is the Laboratory for Innovation in New Energy Technologies and Nanomaterials (LITEN), part of the Tennerdis cluster, and home organization for the INES national center for solar research, located in Chambery, 60 km north of Grenoble.  The Minatec campus includes significant tech transfer operations that have graduated more than 30 start-ups since the 1970’s, including the company that grew to become STMicroelectronics, as well as Soitec, now employing a thousand employees and world leader in Silicon on Insulator substrates.

Minalogic is an industrial and research cluster for micro and nanotechnology and embedded software on chips (EMSoC) that combines over 100 partners from industry, research, education, and economic development.  Projects also include research into medical applications, including embedded systems and minimally invasive surgery.

The National Center for Scientific Research  (CNRS) in Grenoble is a key player in micro and nanotechnologies and nanomaterials.  Over 1,500 staff work in 69 laboratories.  Since 2001, research and development has resulted in 90 patents, 46 licensing agreements, and 25 start-ups.

European Synchrotron Radiation Facility employs 600 and hosts over 5,000 visiting researchers each year.  Its nanoscale x-ray emissions permit the study of a wide range of materials, including biomolocules and nano -magnets. Its immediate proximity to the ILL institute (neutron reactor for scientific applications) as well as the cooperation with Minatec nanocharacterization platform makes it a unique combination to study matters in domains as varied as nanoelectronics or proteomics.

Private research in Grenoble includes major electronics companies –The IBM-STMicroelectronic alliance replaces the former Crolles 2 Freescale Semiconductors, NXP semiconductor and STMicroelectronics alliance and constitutes one of the world’s biggest research laboratory in nanotechnology applications, all the way to a pilot line enabling researchers to actually work in real fab conditions.  The Crolles 2002 investment established, Grenoble as one of top leading  research centers in this field in Europe.

Renewable Energy

Tennerdis is the coordinating association for a national cluster including public and private research, universities, and companies dedicated to education, research, and commercialization of renewable energy technologies.  Of particular interest to Colorado investors are the sectors of solar energy and energy distribution network innovation.  The Rhône-Alpes Region has the highest concentration of thermal and photovoltaic companies and installed systems of any other region in France.

Technology & Science

The Grenoble Institute of Technology (INPG) is one of France’s leading engineering schools.  Key fields of study include information technology, micro and nanotechnologies, physics, environment, energy, materials and production systems.  The University benefits from its collaboration with Minatec, which the university co-founded.  It is also a founding member of Tennerdis and Minalogic.  Tech transfer operations are conducted by INPG Enterprise SA, a wholly-owned subsidiary.

INRIA is national research institute on computer science and applied mathematics, located in Grenoble, and collaborates very closely on several programs with Ecole Centrale de Lyon (www.inrialpes.fr)

The University Joseph Fournier is a leading European university in the fields of medicine, physics, mathematics, information technology, chemistry, and biology. The university’s 17,500 students include
2,000 from abroad.  Similar to the Grenoble Institute of Technology, the university has a tech transfer subsidiary, Floralis.

In 2006, bioMerieux, the world’s leading supplier of in vitro diagnostics, opened its International Center for Molecular Biology and Microsystems Research.  The center focuses on research into new miniaturized molecular diagnostics systems in the fields of infectious disease, oncology, and the microbiological control of industrial processes.
