Lyon-Gerland Technopole is part of a major redevelopment of a former military base which is within the city boundaries of Lyon. The Technopole includes University campuses, public and private research laboratories, incubators, and companies from start-up to multinationals. The major lifescience cluster in the Technopole is focused on molecular biology, virology, and bioinformatics.
Lyonbiopole is a major national cluster focused on infectious disease, including viral-induced cancer. In addition to advanced studies in these fields and the presence of numerous public research organizations, the cluster includes the research laboratories of five world leading companies. These include:
- Sanofi Pasteur – human vaccines
- Genzyme – monoclonal antibodies
- BioMerieux – in vitro diagnostics
- Becton Dickinson – medical devices
- Merial – animal health
Of interest to Colorado bioscience companies is that significant incentives and innovative financing are available to international companies, from research to start-ups.
Bioparc Lyon is a remarkable new research campus that is under development. It is located in the center of the second largest teaching hospital cluster in Europe. When completed, the campus will include 400,000 sq. ft. of research space. Similar to the Fitzsimons Campus in Colorado, the development will include hotels, residences, restaurants, shopping and conference facilities. The metro and modern tramways serve the campus which is minutes from the city center. The focus of the campus is research in infectious disease, cancer, and neurological diseases. The headquarters for the Canceropole cluster is located on the campus as well as several research laboratories occupying the first phase. In total, the cluster includes approximately 1,000 researchers in cancer-related fields.
Lyon Bioadvisor is an organization that offers services to member companies engaged in all fields of bioscience. Services include support of economic and scientific development, including assistance with financing and member networking events, including BioTuesday, which attracts 200 companies bi-monthly.
The number and size of member companies are comparable to Colorado, setting aside the global companies described above. In total, member organizations include 150 biotech/pharma and medical device companies, all major public and private research organizations, financial investors and professional service firms.
